As the 2024-25 hunting season approaches, California hunters have reason to be optimistic about quail and chukar prospects. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is predicting a strong season for both species, thanks to favorable environmental conditions following a year of above-average rainfall.
Season Dates and Bag Limits
The statewide hunting season for quail and chukar opens on Saturday, October 19, 2024, and runs through January 26, 2025. Hunters can take up to 10 quail per day in any combination of species and up to six chukars per day. It’s worth noting that the season for mountain quail in Zone 1 opened earlier, on September 14, while Zone 2 opened for both mountain and California quail on September 28.
Favorable Conditions and Population Outlook
The recent rainfall patterns have contributed significantly to the positive outlook for quail and chukar populations. Both species heavily rely on healthy insect populations to feed their young, and adequate rainfall supports this crucial food source. The rainy February we experienced earlier this year has likely further bolstered these conditions, potentially leading to increased breeding success and higher population numbers.
However, it’s important to consider the impact of the January wildfires (Palisades Fire & Eaton Fire in Southern California). While wildfires can have devastating short-term effects, they often lead to improved habitat conditions in subsequent years. The burned areas may provide excellent foraging opportunities for quail and chukar, as new growth attracts insects and provides cover. This could potentially concentrate birds in certain areas, offering hunters unique opportunities.
Hunting Opportunities Across the State
California’s diverse landscape provides a variety of hunting experiences for quail and chukar enthusiasts. Every county in California is home to at least one of the three native quail species: California quail, mountain quail, and Gambel’s quail. This widespread distribution offers hunters the chance to explore different terrains and habitats throughout the state.

Potential Challenges and Considerations
Despite the positive outlook, hunters should be aware of potential challenges. The January wildfires may have altered some traditional hunting areas, requiring adaptability and potentially new scouting efforts when hunting in Southern California. Additionally, while the rainy February was generally beneficial, localized flooding or habitat changes might have affected some populations differently across the state.
Preparing for the Season
Although the season really just ended in California, it’s never too late to start preparing. One of my favorite things to do is scout new or changed areas while I hunt sheds during the winter months. It never ceases to amaze me how much landscape can change in just one year’s time.
- Scout areas early, especially those affected by recent wildfires or flooding.
- Stay informed about any wildfire-related or other closures before heading out.
- Consider exploring new areas, as changing conditions may have created unexpected hotspots.
- Practice ethical hunting and follow all regulations to ensure a sustainable future for these game birds.

In my opinion, the 2025-26 quail and chukar season is shaping up to be one of the most promising in recent years. The combination of favorable rainfall, potential habitat improvements from the January wildfire, and the CDFW’s positive outlook all point to an exciting season ahead. However, success will likely depend on hunters’ ability to adapt to changing conditions and put in the necessary scouting work.
Responsible hunting practices are crucial for wildlife conservation and the future of the sport. Always check local regulations, obtain proper licenses, and follow ethical hunting guidelines to ensure a sustainable and enjoyable hunting experience for years to come.
